Green Lantern

Let's start with the main thing: the movie is not so bad.

Warner invested 300 million in Green Lantern, and to make sure to recover that money he decided NOT to premiere. It simultaneously around the world. In fact in Chile will be released on August 11 and according to this list, Latin America and most of Europe will have to wait until that month to watch the movie. A lot of time for the pirates to copy and distribute the movie ... like the one, I was able to download via torrent.

The copy I found is bad, but you can watch the movie. Unfortunately for me and fortunately for Warner, the image quality does not allow to appreciate good form special effects. So I was still eager to see the movie at the cinema.

The story: Abin Sur (Temuera Morrison), is the most celebrated and legendary of the members of the Green Lantern Corps. At some point in the past the Guardians of the Universe entrusted him with the task of capturing Parallax (whose origin touches the past of these immortals. Who self-designated protectors of the Universe), Abin Sur was successful. But, the result of an accident, Parallax manages to escape and his first instinct is to take revenge on Abin Sur. The fight is fast and violent, Abin Sur injured and escapes to the nearest inhabited planet. Earth, where the ring chooses Hal Jordan as its replacement.

Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds), is a reckless and irresponsible test pilot. Who has a complex relationship with Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), the daughter of his boss, and who lives tormented by the death of his father in a test session? Hal receives the ring and his natural instinct is to reject responsibility. Something he has done all his life. But the events of the film will lead him to accept the burden of being the protector of sector 2814 and face Parallax to save the Earth of total destruction.

If there is a problem with this movie it is the excess of characters and/or the lack of time to develop them. The film lasts about 2 hours an extension that is quite reasonable. In my opinion there are some characters, I found it was a waste to hire Tim Robbins for the role of Senator Hammond or Angela Bassett as Amanda Waller, their roles are rather pivotal, they explain the psychological development of other characters such as Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard), or rightly they are of adornment ... the role of Angela Bassett could do it any. They take the trouble to tell the origin of Amanda Waller. But they could omit the scene and give the paper to any other actress or actor and would have given the same. This is not a criticism of Angela Bassett ... it seems that what Warner wanted to do here is to imitate the inclusion of Samuel L... Jackson as Nick Fury in the various Marvel franchises to make them part of a shared universe. But the Amanda Waller of This film is so insignificant, it is so far from the hard woman able to argue with Batman and make questionable decisions for the reasons that she considers relevant, that it seems that the only coincidence is race and name.

I think you could say something like all the rest of the Green Lanterns that appear in the film. Their inclusion is rather anecdotal, they serve to contrast the inexperience of Hal Jordan (and make a nod to the fans). But do not stand out for own beyond the utilitarian role they fulfill (the host, the coach, the experienced, etc). Except for Sinestro, the rest do not show more than personality casings and while Mark Strong does a great job giving weight to each of the appearances of his character, his development is almost nil ... all his scenes do nothing but cement the bases of the sequel ... one that may not come to fruition. If so, in the absence of a sequel, all the effort of the actor will have been for nothing. Because the only thing outlined here is its prominent place in the hierarchy of Green Lanterns. The admiration receives from the rest. It's an influence on the Guardians of the Universe and its affinity with "the dark side of the force". The use of the power that feeds Parallax, and although enumerated seems enough. In the development of history, it is not.

That corresponds to the beginning of the fight, as I would like to discuss it in details. I warn you that the green paragraphs contain SPOILERS !!

After the scene they see, Hal decides not to surrender. He creates a construct of an airplane with a propeller, crosses Parallax through the mouth and leaves the other side. Parallax begins to follow him and since they first collide with asteroids and then go to the Sun. I deduce that first, they traveled to Mars and then they returned. In Hal's training scene, Kilowog creates a gravitational vortex that almost sucks him in. Hal remembers the lesson so he reaches the Eventual Horizon of the Sun. Attracting Parallax until the sun's gravity catches him. Then creates constructs that They return until just beyond the Eventual Horizon and use another construct to push Parallax towards the sun and that's it! ... the good ones won.

I do not know about you. But you do not get to be an intergalactic genocidal entity following a Green Lantern to the Eventual Horizon of a Star and then being sucked by it. Any self-respecting intergalactic genocidal entity knows how to escape from the gravitational force of the Sun or at least it is not distracted. When they take it towards it because the Sun is not tiny so that one does not see it.

Beyond these problems the film entertains, Reynolds has charisma and Hal Jordan is fully identifiable with the character that Geoff Johns has been writing for about 7 or 8 years. So fans of the series should be happy with the movie (which probably means that those who do not like Johns' comics will have an adverse reaction).

As fun and excuse to eat popcorn, Green Lantern works quite well. Maybe even worth seeing in 3D for special effects. But the lower your expectations, the more satisfied you will come out of the cinema. Perhaps the most interesting thing about Green Lantern is to see how its performance at the box office affects the plans of Warner and DC Comics for the development of other franchises of the company (specifically the Justice League film), and the bet to create a design uniform for the characters in the different media in which they appear. I cannot recommend the film to them with a clear conscience, but I would not say that it is for starting out.
