Review
How to Train Your Dragon
Hiccup is a Viking
teenager. He lives on Mema Island, a village besieged by the attacks of
voracious and destructive dragons. Hiccup's father is the chief of the tribe
and he is disappointed that his son is a boy who, physically, do not fill the
"standards" of the typical Viking. He is skinny and clumsy in the
handling of weapons. It has other valuable virtues. Such as wit and
intelligence, it is also intuitive and respectful. But these are not qualities
that are much appreciated in a Viking. So, it is the mockery of the villagers.
Hiccup, on the other hand, wants to prove that he is a warrior worthy of his
father and is anxious to kill a dragon. He has invented a weapon to do it and
one night, during one of the attacks, he manages to tie one up, but when he is
about to kill him, he pities the beast, frees it and ... becomes his friend.
This friendship will change his life and, with time, the destiny of the
village.
Based on an adaptation of
Cressida Cowell's children's book. Directors DeBlois and Sanders have done an
attractive and very entertaining work. They make a good study of the characters
and deliver positive messages about the father-daughter relationship,
friendship, communication and the harmful effect of prejudice. Creativity is
especially fun in different kinds of dragons and their destructive abilities.
The effects of sounds are excellent and the conclusion, with unexpected detail,
has flashes of moving "humanity".
