Review
Predator 2
One thing I have
never been able to understand is the almost generalized contempt that exists
towards Predator 2 (1990). Even among those enthusiasts of John McTiernan's
original. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger himself expressed at the time his scant
interest in this sequel. Arguing that the change of setting (instead of the
jungle, this second part takes place in a futuristic Los Angeles ravaged by a
war between street gangs). Discarded one of the biggest attractions of the
first part. At first, this is a statement with which I can not agree. But, it
seems to me that taking the monster to the city was the logical step to take
for a continuation. Among other things because this scenario (as dangerous and
chaotic as the jungle, let's not deceive ourselves) allows the film to take the
inevitable path of the sequels. Presenting the same successful elements of the
original. But in a big way, and although it is true that the mystery that
surrounded the character in the first film cannot be reproduced. It is not less
true that the monster on this occasion is much more brutal and represents a
real challenge for the brave protagonist.
Another of the great
successes of Predator 2. Its ability to let us intuit key aspects of the
mythology of monsters and their origin without the need for explanatory
dialogues. In fact, the screenwriter John Thomas, also the creator of the first
part. Once said that his idea was to make it clear that this time the
protagonists were facing a younger alien. Which in part would explain both the
new arsenal of weapons and the arrogance of the monster when hunting in a city
in the middle of human civilization. I am not sure that this invention has been
achieved at all. But I do think the way in which Thomas repeats the scheme
presented in the original of 1987 is very successful. As in the first part,
Predator 2 seems at first a very different film. A typical policeman set in a
futuristic city (the technological advance is only appreciable in firearms. In
which a mysterious murderer indiscriminately slaughters to the members of two
terrible rival gangs. While the police officers (led by a Danny Glover
unusually involved in a leading role of crude and brutal hero) try to discover
their identity and find themselves with more than they can deal with.
It is from the entry
of the monster when the film begins to creep into sci-fi terrain. Reaching its
peak with the appearance of government officials. Who links the argument with
the first film. It is noteworthy that the leader of these special agents was
original to be played by a twilight Schwarzenegger and ended up falling into
the hands of Gary Busey in a very different character. Who of course makes the
blunder of wanting to catch the creature alive instead of killing her. The
explanation of this plan is the only discursive moment of Predator 2. Since the
rest is completely dominated by violence and brutality even greater than in the
first part. Seasoned by the exhibition of the new alien weapons and the rain of
shots that almost all the characters are exchanged.
It is in the final
section, once again, where the true essence of this sequel is. Apart from
developing all in one wonderful sequence. Almost the entire third act is a
single chase in which Danny Glover hunt down the monster that has charged his
best friend. Ties in perfectly with the spirit of the original when converting
the fight against the Predator in a heads up against a single man. In this case
a malencarado and brute policeman. Who recognizes himself in full disadvantage
before that enigma of another world. This final fight, set in what is possibly
the best scenario in which he could finish the film (no less than the monster
ship, trophy room included) is not only brilliantly resolved by the director
Stephen Hopkins. But above allows a glimpse (light, subtle) to whole mythology
that would spread by many more means and that would give, with just an image of
a couple of seconds. The perfect excuse for a long-awaited crossover. Twenty
years after its premiere, Predator 2 is reinvindicable despite the fact that at
the time it has not gone well. The premiere of the much delayed third
installment this summer has a very high bar to reach.
